Frequently Asked Criminal Law Questions

First, contact a lawyer immediately. Make no statements to anyone but your lawyer about your case. Remember that you always have the right to remain silent. Consult with a lawyer before allowing any law enforcement to search your body, house, car, phone, or other property. If the government has probable cause to search you or your property, they can apply for a warrant–you do not have to agree to be searched.

The sooner you reach out to a lawyer, the more quickly they can help you front-end your case.

Breathe. This is a stressful situation. Make sure you are getting the professional resources you need to stay healthy.

Your lawyer will advise you about what you need to do to be ready for court, but here are some tips.

Make sure you know where and when you need to be in court. For example, although they are different jurisdictions, Boulder and Denver each have state and municipal courts in the same building. Make sure you know which courtroom you’re going to.

Plan how you will get to court and have a backup means of transport just in case. It is not always easy to take public transportation to the courthouse. Every courthouse has some form of security that you will have to go through, so leave time for that process. Do not bring anything illegal to the courthouse. Do not bring any weapons to the courthouse. Make sure that you’ve gone through your pockets or any bags you bring to court just in case.

Lastly, make sure you have talked to your lawyer about where and when to meet them. If you can be early, do so.

The possible sentences you face are based on the charges on which you are ultimately convicted. And the sentence will take into account many variables, including the law, your criminal history, the circumstances of the offense, and your individual background.

An experienced lawyer will advise you what possible sentences exist for your situation and will take steps to minimize the punitive effect on you.

Unfortunately, people can be wrongly charged with crimes. Your best option to deal with a situation like this is to contact an experienced lawyer, who will know how to investigate your case to try to reach the right outcome.
